How Can We Make Change? Part 1 – Reform vs Systems Change

This workshop is the first in a three-part series exploring the theory and practice of creating meaningful change and challenging systems of oppression. In this session, participants will examine the differences between reform and systems change, unpack the assumptions that underpin both approaches, and reflect on their effectiveness in addressing the root causes of injustice on these lands. The workshop also critically explores dominant ideologies such as liberalism and the not-for-profit sector, analysing how these frameworks can both enable and limit transformative change.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • To understand the distinctions between reform and systems change approaches.

  • To explore the historical and cultural contexts that shape change efforts on these lands.

  • To critically analyse how ideologies like liberalism and the NFP model influence justice work.

  • To reflect on participants’ own approaches to change and the assumptions that guide them.

  • To develop a foundation for deeper engagement with power, systems, and collective liberation in future sessions.

These sessions were developed with funding from Transgender Victoria’s Peer Support Program.
