How Can We Make Change? Part 3 – Types of Activism

This workshop is the third in a three-part series exploring the theory and practice of creating change and challenging systems of oppression. In this final session, participants revisit reform and systems change approaches and apply these frameworks to real-world examples of activism. Together, we examine different tactics and strategies—how movements decide when to act, when to escalate, and how to sustain collective efforts over time. The workshop also explores how to support our communities to take risks safely, grounding these reflections in both local and global struggles for justice. Participants are invited to reflect on their own role, power, and positionality within broader movements for change.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • To apply reform and systems change frameworks to real-world activism.

  • To analyse a range of activist strategies, tactics, and escalation points.

  • To explore how to build community capacity and collective courage for taking action.

  • To reflect on the global and local contexts that shape movements for justice.

  • To identify one’s own role, positionality, and contribution to long-term systems change.
