Exploring Intersectionality
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Define and explain intersectionality and how diverse identities shape workplace experiences.
Understand the origins and meaning of intersectionality and its links to colonial power structures.
Analyse power and privilege in cultural, racial, and gender dynamics across different contexts.
Explore how overlapping systems of oppression affect people differently, including the impacts of colonialism
Recognise intersectionality gaps in policies, practices, and advocacy efforts.
Develop skills to foster an intersectional workplace culture through allyship, inclusive leadership, and meaningful engagement.
This workshop explores the concept of intersectionality and how people’s experiences of privilege and oppression are shaped by the interaction of race, gender, class, sexuality, disability, and other identities. We unpack how these dynamics are rooted in historical and ongoing systems of colonialism. Participants will examine how colonial legacies continue to structure power, create inequities, and amplify marginalisation for First Nations peoples and other communities impacted by overlapping forms of oppression.
Through group discussions, activities, and case studies, we’ll unpack how intersectionality shows up in workplaces, communities, and social movements. The workshop equips participants with tools to recognise these dynamics and design approaches that centre the voices and experiences of those most affected.
